01/21/2010 Tetris is selling 100 million mobile devices

[UPDATE] EA and Blue Planet Software to confirm the hallmark Alexey Pajitnov 'puzzle was "best-selling mobile games of all time."

Tetris was the principal in the gaming industry for over 25 years. Created by Alexey Pajitnov when he worked at the Computing Center of Russian Academy of Sciences, seed puzzle was originally programmed for the Electronica 60 and has since seen iterations on platforms ranging from the original Game Boy for the current generation systems like Wii and Xbox 360.

Tetris hit big time on the NES.

Today, Associated Press reports that Tetris is the best selling mobile games of all time, achieving more than 100 million paid downloads on mobile phones worldwide. EA Mobile and license manager Blue Planet Software confirmed the news for the AP, and the publisher is expected to make its official announcement tomorrow.

[UPDATE] In its official announcement today, EA clarify the 100 million milestone, stating that it includes only paid download to mobile phones since 2005.

EA declined to say how much revenue Tetris caused, although a wire service notes that the iPhone edition of the game goes for $ 5. EA Mobile vice president Adam Sussman said that AP Tetris is now available in 60 countries and is compatible with 64000 different models of phones.
